We'd like to introduce you to our Family Roots Farm mascot; Meet 55.
In the fall of 2022, the first 50 head of cattle stepped off a trailer and onto our feedlot. Among this herd was a little blonde steer that set himself apart from the crowd right away. With an ear tag reading "55," this little steer showed us that he was friendly, curious and had a big personality. He won over everyone who encountered him and it became clear that none of us would ever be comfortable sending him to be processed.
We've had numerous people ask us why we haven't given 55 a name yet. The answer is simple; 55 is his name. There was an ad campaign from the Department of Transportation in the 1970s about the speed limit. In a nutshell, the campaign said "55, stay alive" and the name for our loveable steer stuck. In terms of nicknames, Mark will often be heard calling him "Big Boy."
55 could be comfortable lounging in the shade, but if he sees Mark approaching or hears his voice, 55 will be up and on the move to greet him. We lovingly refer to him as our 1700 pound Golden Lab. 55 loves to scratch his head on Mark's jeans and be brushed.
So, despite his size (and the likely beautiful marbling he has), 55 will continue to live out his days at the farm. You can catch some of his best moments on our Instagram. We share our "tails" of 55 so you can love him along with us.
